Simple changes can make a big difference for senior dogs!

Senior dogs are treasures. They’ve walked alongside us through so many chapters of life, and as they grow older, their needs change—often in subtle ways.

The good news?! With a few thoughtful adjustments at home, you can help your pup stay safe, comfortable, and confident as they move through their golden years.

Flooring & Traction

Slippery floors can be scary—and dangerous-for aging pets. Not only can they affect their ability to stand up easier, they can also be a source of falls or other injuries!

-Add non-slip rugs, yoga mats, or runners on hardwood or tile. You should think about adding these especially anywhere your dog spends most of their time and especially getting up/down.

—Dog socks or boots with grips are another option, however it is imperative to note your furry friend may try liking or chewing on these. Plus, please be sure to check skin and don’t leave it on them at all times. Check for sores, skin breakdown, or rubbing areas.

Ramps & Stairs

Jumping onto furniture or into the car puts extra strain on aging joints and can cause injury. Offering assistance not only allows easier access to these surfaces, it also means less pain and more confidence for your friend!

-Use pet ramps or steps for beds, couches, or even vehicles

-Add carpeted or non slip surface support to existing steps in home.

-Use of a sling or support like Help em up Harness

Beds & Resting Areas

Comfort matters more than ever for senior dogs. They need a place to rest as quality rest fuels quality of life!

-Choose orthopedic or memory foam beds for joint relief.

-Keep beds low and accessible so your pup can easily get in and out

-Place them in a warm, draft-free spots.

— Check to ensure they are waterproof as needed and do not allow your dog to lay on wet spots or urine soaked areas as this sets them up for skin injury, UTI, or other issues.

-Even if your dog sleeps in bed with you, offering a safe, warm, comfortable spot to rest is imperative!

Food & Water Access

Little adjustments at mealtimes can go a long way and eating and drinking should never be a struggle!

-Raised bowls help reduce strain on the neck and back

-Non slip mats help keep bowls stable

-Ensure water is always fresh and accessible.

Lighting & Safety

Vision changes are common with age and good lighting helps your dog feel secure and prevents accidents!

—Add nightlights in hallways, near stairs, or in favorite pathways

—Clear clutter to create open walkways.

—Try to limit rearranging pathways to help kiddos with vision loss

Supportive Gear

For dogs with weakness or instability there are tools that help restore freedom and dignity.

-A support sling or harness like help em up Harness can help with stairs and potty breaks

-Mobility carts or braces may also be options for advanced support as needed.

Gentle Exercise & Rehab

Movement is medicine-especially for aging pups! Plus staying active helps support the body, mind, and spirit of any species!

-Take short, consistent walks on easy terrain. Also allow for sniff walks! This helps encourage mobility and is good for their mind!

—Engage in low-impact exercises to maintain strength

—Consider rehab sessions for personalized care!
