Why a Healthy Weight Matters

Did you know that even just 1 pound of weight can add 4 lbs of pressure to their joints! Excess weight doesn’t just affect arthritis and worsening of pain, it can even affect lifespan!

Help your Pet Lose Weight Safely and Stay Active Longer!

Did you know that over 50% of dogs and cats in the US are overweight or obese?!

While those extra pounds may seem “cute”, they actually put your friend at a higher risk for:

  • Arthritis and Joint Pain

  • Heart Disease

  • Breathing Difficulties

  • Lower energy and reduced quality of life

  • Even a SHORTENED LIFESPAN!

How to Tell if Your Pet is Overweight

So, first things first! Is there cause for you to be concerned? One of the easiest and quickest ways to tell if your pet is overweight is to run your hands along their sides. Can you feel their ribs easily? Do you have to press through a layer of fat? One easy way to visualize this is with a knuckle test:

Hold your hand out, palms down:

AARF VA

Ideal Weight

Now feel your knuckles. If your dogs ribs feel like this then there’s likely a healthy amount of fat and they are at an IDEAL weight.

However, if their ribs feel more like your knuckles when making a fist:

AARF VA

Underweight

this likely indicates UNDERWEIGHT!

And finally, if you have to work to feel their ribs like you would with your hand palm up:

Overweight

they are likely OVERWEIGHT

You can also use a Body Condition Score (BCS).

Please just remember, these. are guidelines and do not replace a vet’s assessment. If you suspect issues with their weight, please consult with your vet!

Why That Extra Weight Hurts More Than You Think

Even a few extra pounds can strain your pet’s joints, muscles, and heart. Excess weight can affect ability to jump, groom, heal from injury, and increase pain. Obesity also makes dogs more prone to certain diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, orthopedic conditions, or cancer! Studies have also shown that life expectancy is even reduced by almost 2 years!
