When Rest Isn’t The Answer!
Why Doing Less Can Sometimes Make Things WORSE!
We’ve all heard it before:
Just let them rest
Keep them quiet for a few days
They probably just overdid it
And, yes, sometimes that’s exactly what your pet needs.
BUT NOT ALWAYS!
In many cases, especially with joint issues like arthritis, doing less can actually make things WORSE!
Why Rest Feels Like the Right Answer
When your dog is sore, stiff, or limping rest makes sense. Less movement= less pain, right?!
Well, short answer yes. Rest can calm inflammation and give the tissues a chance to recover. Especially if your kiddo is high energy or recovering from an acute injury or surgery. Rest is an important aspect of healing, but when rest (or rest and medication) becomes the only strategy, the body begins to change in ways we don’t want!
What Happens When Dogs Do Less
When movement decreases, the body adapts quickly:
Muscles begin to weaken
Joints lose support and stability
Stiffness increases
Balance and coordination decline
Compensations begin or worsen
Dogs enter a nasty pain cycle that becomes harder to break out of!
What may have started out as a small issue can quickly become a much larger problem!
The Movement Your Dog Actually Needs
However, the goal isn’t just more activity, let your dog run wild, or push beyond tolerance! The goal is the right kind of movement!
By using targeted mobility plans and exercises structured for individual needs, we are able to use controlled intentional movement to:
maintain muscle strength
support joints
reduce stiffness
improve circulation
rebuild confidence
and most importantly get them moving better faster!
Rest and Rehab
Think of it this way:
Rest: helps calm things down
Rehab: helps build things back up
BOTH have a place and are important in the recovery journey! If we push too quickly the dog may become injured or have a slower recovery. If we rest without rebuilding strength and stability along the way the dog may feel better briefly but then regress! Plus, they are very likely to experience cycles of going through the same issue over and over again!
Bottom Line
There are times when rest is necessary such as immediately post injury (acute), post-surgical (with guidance), and during acute flare-ups. But even during this time, there are gentle exercises/activities that can be done to optimally support their recovery.
SO..instead of asking “should my dog just rest and we’ll see”, a better question is “What kind of movement does my dog need right now?!” This simple shift is a game changer in overall, long-term mobility.
Rest is not the enemy. It’s just not the full answer either!
Your dog’s body is designed to move-and when we support that movement in the right way, we don’t just reduce pain…..we restore strength, confidence, and quality of life!
